After applying a thick coat of crayon to their papers and covering it with black paint, the children scratch in designs and embellish them with oil pastels. For ages 9 to 13. Plan 4 sessions.

THE CHICKEN AND THE HULA HOOP

The chicken in the chicken coop

is playing with a hula hoop.

Who went and left a hula hoop

in the chicken coop today?

She’s twisting and she’s twirling,

there’s a cloud of feathers swirling,

and the hula hoop is whirling

as she swivels and she sways.

A hula hoop misplaced in haste

is strangely to this chicken’s taste,

who has, it’s true, no real waist

and rather wobbly legs.

But when you see how she can whir

so fast her middle starts to blur,

I’m fairly sure that you’ll concur:

we’re having scrambled eggs!

The children listen to poems read aloud and then make drawings to illustrate them. For ages 6 to 13. Plan 1 session.

Drawing - Flowers

The children draw flowers after carefully exploring the individual parts. For ages 3 to 6. Plan 1 session.

Printing & Drawing - Suns and Frames

The children make simple relief prints and then embellish them with hand-drawn frames. For ages 3 to 6. Plan 3 sessions.

Drawing - Multicrayon Engraving

After applying several layers of crayon to their papers, the children make engravings, filling them with patterns and textures. For ages 6 to 13. Plan 2 sessions.

Drawing - Inside a Dwelling

The children learn how to illustrate the inside view of a dwelling by looking at the cut-away view of a dollhouse. For ages 6 to 9. Plan 1 to 2 sessions.

Drawing - Small Pots with Flowers

After looking closely at the individual shapes of small pots and flowers, the children draw them using markers. For ages 3 to 6. Plan 1 session.

Drawing - Head-to-toe Self-Portraits

The children do exercises to learn about the proportions of their bodies and then draw self-portraits. Ages 3 to 9. Plan 2 sessions.

Drawing - Making It Surreal

The children dream up synectic or surreal drawings by bringing together ideas not normally related to each other. For ages 9 to 13. Plan 1 to 2 sessions.

Drawing - Zany Zoo

The children create never-before-seen animals for a "Zany Zoo." For all ages. Plan 1 to 2 sessions.

Drawing – Fluorescent Flowers

The children draw flowers, color them with oil pastels, and then apply a fluorescent watercolor wash. For all ages. Plan 2 sessions.

Drawing – Fishbowls

The children draw large fishbowls, then fill them with fish and glue on tissue paper “water.” For ages 3 to 6. Plan 1 to 2 sessions.

Drawing & Printing - Thumbprints

The children learn a basic printing technique by filling their papers with thumbprints and turning them into fun and imaginative characters. For all ages. Plan 1 session.

Drawing - Look, Eat, and Draw

As fruit is cut or eaten, the children record changes in the contour lines. For ages 6 to 13. Plan 1 to 2 sessions.

Drawing - Emotions

In this project, the children play along with you, recognizing different emotions and recording the facial changes they observe. For ages 6 to 9. Plan 1 session.
